Rock Valley, IA: Pauline Bliek, 98, of Rock Valley, died Friday, October 7, 2005 at Hegg Memorial Hospital. Funeral Service will be 1:30 pm Tuesday at First Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial at Hope Cemetery, Hull, IA. Rev. John Engbers will be officiating. Visitation with family will be 6 - 8 pm Monday at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.
Pauline was born near Boyden, IA on July 11, 1907, the second daughter of Harry and Artje (Mouw) Scholten. She had 3 brothers and 8 sisters. When she was 12 years old, her parents moved to Hull where her father farmed part-time and augured wells. She graduated the Hull Christian School in 1922.
She helped raise her younger siblings and at 16 began providing domestic help for relatives. In 1928 she worked for the Bee Hive Grocery store in Hull. She met Adolph Bliek in February of 1928 and after working for the Niekirk family of Denver, CO in 1929 she returned to Iowa and she and Adolph were married November 28, 1930. Four children were born to this union, Adrian, Duane, Phyllis, and Delaine.
Pauline and Adolph farmed the majority of their lives together, both in Minnesota and Iowa before retiring to a home in Rock Valley in 1978 where Pauline lived until her death. Adolph died October 24, 1987.
She was a lifetime member of Christian Reformed Church and Martha Circle for many years. She was an exemplary Christian wife and mother; enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening and cards, however, her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. In later years she was active at the Rock Valley Senior Center where she volunteered as a packer for the ladies’ cookie project. She was well known in the community and she was given the “Ageless Hero Award” by the city several years ago.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; her husband, Adolph; 3 brothers; and 5 sisters.
She is survived by son, Adrian (Jennie) Bliek of Rock Valley; daughters, Phyllis Hartog of Edgerton, MN, Delaine (Bill) Crippen of North Liberty, IA; 10 grandchildren; 29 greatgrandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; sisters: Arlyna Vande Griend of Hull, IA, Martha Zandstra and Arta Collins both of Grand Rapids, MI; brothers-in-law: Bill Reyelts of Hull, Henry Sneller of Doon, IA . She will also be lovingly remembered by friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members.
