| | | Rock Valley, IA - Art Attema, 91 of Rock Valley, died Wednesday, August 01, 2007 at Hegg Memorial Hospital. Funeral Services will be 1:30 pm Saturday at First Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial is at Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley. No Family visitation. Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley is in charge of arrangements.
Arthur “Art” Attema was born March 4, 1916 near Sioux Center, son of Pier and Bertha (Van Duyn) Attema. He graduated from Western Academy at Hull and attended Northwestern College at Orange City. Art served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a radio operator based in Hawaii. Returning from the service he married the love of his life, Hillene Pals on August 16, 1946 at Hull, IA. Together they lived in Rock Valley where they had two children, Arthur Lee and Barbara Attema. Art worked briefly for Berghorst House Moving and then for Iowa Public Service, from which he retired. He also partnered with John Van Zanten in developing and owning the Valley Park Motel. Art was active in his church, where he had served as an elder, clerk, choir member and a church historian. He will be remembered for his love of traveling, his quick wit, editorial writing and avid support of Western and Dordt sports.
Art is survived by his son, Arthur (Phyllis) Attema of Sioux Center IA; daughter Barbara Lynn (Lee) Attema of Houston, TX; 4 grandchildren, Erin (Ryan) Groen, Colin (Rachel) Attema, Morgan Attema and Lee Arthur Attema; 2 great-grandchildren, Elise and William Groen; sister, Agnes Rasmussen of Hull, IA; sisters-in-law, Clarissa Attema of Acworth, GA, Henrietta Olsen of Sioux Center, IA
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Pier and Bertha; wife Hillene; brothers, Gerrit, Tony, Jake and Lane Attema; and sister Anne Attema.
