HAWARDEN, IOWA –WINFERD “WINDY” ALLEN, 81 of Hawarden, Iowa died suddenly on Friday, July 6, 2007 at the Hawarden Community Hospital.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Military committal service will be by the Bergstrom-Bodeen American Legion Post 128 of Hudson, SD. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Winferd L. “Windy” Allen was born September 16, 1925 at Hawarden, Iowa, the son of William Sharp and Lucinda Marie (Ball) Allen. He attended school through the sophomore year and received his honorary diploma at the age of 75 years. He was baptized and did his re-affirmation of faith at Trinity Lutheran Church. He served with the US Navy from November 1943 to May of 1946 serving in the Aleutian Islands. Following the service he was in the concrete business with his father in Hawarden until moving to Denver in the early 1950’s where he continued in the concrete business. He returned to Hawarden for a short time, worked as a bartender in Sioux Falls, and then moved to Salt Lake City where he ran a bar.
Windy came back to Hawarden and formed the Waterman-Allen Construction with Marv Waterman in the early 1970’s, where many basements were created for many homes in and around Hawarden. Later working journeys took him to Sac City, Iowa where he created Allen Construction. Hawarden was always home and in the late 70’s he returned to manage The Jolly Roger. He managed the Eagle’s Club in Hawarden and was employed at Iowa Lamb, he retired from the bar business at age 77.
Windy married Karen Hughes on September 9, 1981 in Deadwood, South Dakota. He enjoyed fishing, the History Channel, being in a pool league, playing double deck solitaire and driving around checking new construction and time with his best bud Timmy. He was a member of the Bergstom-Bodeen American Legion Post 128 of Hudson and the VFW Post 6149 of Alcester.
He is survived by his son, Derek Allen and wife Laura of Hawarden; daughter, Justina Allen of Marshall, Minnesota; foster son, Denny Johnson of Crescent Valley, Nevada; foster daughter, Darcie Johnson and husband Tom Kilijanek of Elizabeth, Colorado; a brother, William “Bill” Allen of Alcester, South Dakota; sister, Lila Lewis of Hawarden; brother-in-law, Squirt Jensen of Alcester; 3 grandchildren, Timothy, Dakota, and Grace Allen; 4 foster grandchildren, Kasia Kilijanek, Jake, Jenny, and Aaron Johnson and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Rick Jensen and Beverly Allen; and an infant brother.
