Betty May was born September 29, 1931 in Knoxville, Iowa to Homer and Mary (Jones) Smith. She went to grade school in Knoxville and graduated from Melcher High School. She married Lloyd Monty Fee in 1949 in Des Moines, Iowa. They were blessed with two sons: Doug and Jerry.

Betty was a strong and independent person. She was involved in her community helping with many local functions. Betty worked many different jobs providing for her family including driving a truck, waitress at the Farm House, running the Melcher Flower Shop, and flew all over the country buying mink. Betty enjoyed traveling, watching NASCAR, flowers, and her pets. She loved her family especially her grandchildren.

Betty passed away November 29, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Indianola. She was preceded in death by her parents: Homer and Mary Smith, and grandson, Douglas Tyler Fee. Betty is survived by husband, Monty Fee of Melcher-Dallas; sons: Doug (Nancy) Fee of Runnells, Jerry (Pam) Fee of Melcher-Dallas, and Darrell (Luzive Romen) Bowers of Piedmont, MO; 10 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and siblings: Tomma Lou (Giles) Jay of Grinnell, and Homer “Butch” (Kathy) Smith of Livingston, TX.
