John J. DeWitt, 89, passed away Monday (December 5, 2011) at his residence. The Logan, West Virginia native was born January 2, 1922, the son of the late John DeWitt and Pearlie Sharp DeWitt Steed. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Berry DeWitt, who passed away January 1, 1998.

Mr. DeWitt attended Coal Grove Schools and was an Army WWII Veteran. He was a former flue tender for the Ironton Semet-Solvay and enjoyed hunting, watching baseball, football and NASCAR. He loved spending time with his family and church family. He was a 52 year active member of the Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and college trustee.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by:
a step-father: Lloyd Steed
2 brothers: Paul DeWitt and Raymond Hurst
a grandson: Michael Hunt

He is survived by:
a daughter and son-in-law: Linda and Edward Hunt of Kitts Hill
a son and daughter-in-law: Johnny and Gloria DeWitt of Kitts Hill
granddaughter: Noel Pemberton of Ironton
grandson and his wife: Jason and Jodie Hunt of Kitts Hill
grandson and his fiancee: Mark DeWitt and Stephanie Phillips of Kitts Hill
4 great grandchildren: Hunter Pemberton, Brady Pemberton both of Ironton and Gracie Hunt and Ellie Hunt both of Kitts Hill

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday (December 8, 2011) at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 South Seventh Street, Ironton, Ohio with Pastor Mike Long and Rev. Clifford Gore officiating. Burial will follow in Sugar Creek Cemetery with military graveside rites by V.F.W. Post 8850. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 PM at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Sugar Creek Christian Academy, 4824 St Rt 141, Ironton, Ohio 45638.
