Gertrude V. Pekkala, 89, of Hancock passed away Thursday afternoon April 5, 2007, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where she had been a resident patient for the past 6 years.
She was born in the Cloverland District on August 18, 1917, a daughter of the late Peter and Hilma (Holappa) Oikarinen. As a child she attended the Cloverland School. Gert had resided in Cloverland District, on Quincy Hill, the state of Oregon, and for the past 56 years has made her home in the Hancock area.
Mrs. Pekkala had worked for a short time as a Nurses Aid at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility.
In November of 1935 she was united in marriage to Jacob Eilola and he preceded her in death in 1958. In August of 1962 she was united in marriage to Arvo Pekkala and he preceded her in death in August of 1988.
She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock, Soumi Kerho, and the Senior American Coalition.
Gert had tremendous pride for her children and grandchildren and loved to spend time with them. She loved to travel, bake and took pride in her Finnish heritage.
Also preceding her in death was a son Roy Eilola, a grandson Steven Halonen, 2 brothers, and 1 sister.

Funeral services for Gert will be held 11 am Thursday April 12, 2007 in the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Rev. Susan Odegard to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock.
Friends may call on Wednesday April 11, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock and on Thursday April 12, 2007, from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorials may be given to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in memory of Gertrude V. Pekkala.
