Martin Joseph Turck, son of John H. and Joeann (Mulroney) Turck, was born December 13, 1953, in Emmetsburg, Iowa. As a very young boy, Martin became known to his family and friends as Marty. He received his education in Emmetsburg.
Marty truly loved being around people, especially his brothers and sisters. He was always ready to visit, shoot a game of pool or give you a big hug and huge smile. Each year, Marty looked forward to the Turck reunions. He kept track of where each of his brothers and sisters were living throughout the United States and he loved to go on outings in the car. His response was often, “On the road again!”
Marty’s favorite means of transportation was his bike and he will be remembered, by most of the people in Emmetsburg, pedaling down the street and issuing a friendly wave to those he passed. Marty loved music and always had a desire to play the drums or guitar. One year he was even fortunate to receive a drum as a gift. His family wasn’t nearly as excited about it as Marty was.
In 1985, Marty moved into Horizon’s 21st Street Group Home. He was employed at Horizons Unlimited in various capacities. Marty cleaned at the V.F.W. and Iowa Trust and Savings Bank. Cleaning at the bank was a big highlight for him. He also worked at the redemption center and did shredding.
Marty was an avid baseball fan and played on the Horizons team for several years. His favorite sport was wrestling and he often got very involved in the moves while watching wrestling on T.V. Marty was active in the Special Olympics and received many medals for his participation in various events.
In 1992, Marty moved to SAIL apartments on King Street, where he lived until 2010. Then he moved to 19th Street Group Home until October 2011, when his health forced him to enter Emmetsburg Care Center.
Marty passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 58. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Shirley (Mert) Roehler, Jim (Donna) Turck, Mary (Gerry) Zeimet and four infant siblings, Helen, Alice, Thomas and Margaret.
He is survived by brothers, John (Chris) Turck of Corpus Christi, TX, Ron (Lenny) Turck of Killeen, TX, Terry (Elaine) Turck of Portland, OR, Mike (Loni) Turck of Chicago, IL, Bob Turck of Chicago, IL, Don (Jeannie) Turck of Des Moines, IA, Wayne Turck of Windsor Locks, CT, Jerry (Dora) Turck of Everett, WA; sisters, Jeanne (Maurice) Drew of Cylinder, IA, Mary Jane (Dean) Lovell of Lamoni, IA, Sheila (Don) Atkinson of Brooklyn, IA, Cathy (Rick) Dale of Armstrong, IA; many nieces and nephews and cousins; as well as many other relatives and countless friends.
