Alice Darlene Fry, daughter of Ernest Aaron and Anne Marie (Sewell) Fread, was born October 27, 1920, on her grandparents farm near Cylinder, Iowa. She moved with her parents to the Rodman area as a young girl. Darlene received her education in the Rodman school system, graduating from Rodman High School in 1939.

On March 14, 1940, Darlene was united in marriage to Roy Wendell Fry in Emmetsburg, Iowa. They moved to a farm near Ringsted where Darlene helped Roy with farm work. She later was employed as at the Palo Alto County Hospital where she worked in surgery, as an operating room technician. Darlene retired from this position in 1982, after 27 years.

Darlene was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church and church circle in Emmetsburg. She was also a member of Friends Club and a past member of the Pythian Sisters. Darlene enjoyed crocheting and knitting and loved traveling.

Darlene passed away Sunday, May 20, 2012, at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy on August 4, 1988; two sons-in-law, Richard Allen Meints and Donald Wright; a brother, Raymond Fread; and a step grandson, Daron Allen.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna Jean Wright of Ware Shoals, South Carolina and Carol Ann Meints and her husband, Benjamin Thomas Allen of St. Charles, Iowa; five grandchildren, Vicki and John Goodman of Port Charlotte, Florida, Brenda and Glenn Bowers of Ware Shoals, South Carolina, Jamey and Katherine Meints of Gainesville, Virginia, Nicky and Tim Boecker of Aurora, Illinois and Kristy and Cory Fetch of Winterset, Iowa; four step grandchildren, Brad and Jill Allen of Winterset, Iowa, Clayton and Laurie Allen of Winterset, Iowa, John and Jessica Goodman of Greenwood, South Carolina and Faith and Brian Wood of Anderson, South Carolina; fourteen great grandchildren; nine step great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth and Vivian Fread of Ruthven, Iowa and Richard and Rae Jean Fread of Port Richey, Florida; a sister-in-law, Betty Fread of Walla Walla, Washington; as well as many other relatives and friends.
