INTERMENT

Emmetsburg, Iowa

Michael J. Conlon, son of Floyd and Edna (Fandel) Conlon, was born January 13, 1944 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He attended St. Mary’s grade school and Emmetsburg Catholic High School, graduating in 1962. Following graduation Mickey attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Mickey was employed for Boggess Construction for many years before going to work for the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department. He served as a dispatcher for twenty six years, retiring in 2008. Mickey loved working on the farm and continued this work until his illness. He was an avid E’Hawk fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR and golf on television. He loved being with his brother and sisters and their children.

Mickey was a dedicated member of the St. Pat’s Association for thirty eight years, serving in many capacities of the board. He played critical roles in the every day operation of the headquarters, planning and implementation of choosing a dignitary, and the organization of the annual banquet. Mickey will always be remembered for his leadership in preparing for the annual St. Pat’s Parade and seeing that Miss Shamrock and all of the Junior Pageant winners were safely taken to area parades and Des Moines. Each year, the St. Pat’s celebration took place with the help of many volunteers, which Mickey was always willing to credit, when in fact many of the details were seen to by Mickey. Mickey never knew a stranger and made friends wherever he went.

He received the Emmetsburg Rotary Club Business and Industry Award of Merit on May 6, 2008 for his service toward the betterment of Emmetsburg.

He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg and the Knights of Columbus Council 936 of Emmetsburg as well as the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Bishop Heelan Assembly. Mickey was very active in his parish, serving as lector and training mass servers for many years.

Mickey died Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the Palo Alto County Hospital at the age of 65. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Bob Schumacher; and nephew, Billy Staiert.

He is survived by his brother and sisters; Pat and Denny Staiert of Carroll, IA; Jean Marie Schumacher of Whittemore, IA; Dan and Alice Conlon of New Hampton, IA; and Mary Therese and Norm Kohlhaas of Livermore, IA; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and countless friends.
