Ruth Geneva Drown Brallier transitioned to eternal peace and joy on May 15, 2007 at the age of 90 years, 8 months. She was born September 16, 1916 in Curlew, Iowa. Her parents were Jay and Mary (Polly Cross) Drown. She was baptized in the Curlew Methodist Church and confessed a spiritual birth at age 12. Education through high school was completed at Curlew, Iowa. Her dream was to be a librarian but due to difficulty with finances during the Depression, she was unable to continue college beyond one semester at Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis. She was employed at the telephone office in Curlew until her marriage to Amos Brallier in November 1938 at the Curlew Baptist Church.
Ruth became a homemaker and helpmate to her husband who farmed in Palo Alto County in Rush Lake Township. Two children were born and Ruth was very active in their school activities. She enjoyed sewing clothes for them and gardening was a hobby as well as a necessity. She was very active in their rural Church of the Brethren and then in Curlew Baptist Church in children’s ministries and ladies missionary society. She also volunteered for several years at the Palo Alto County Hospital in the Auxiliary. Amos and Ruth were active in building and grounds maintenance at Raccoon River Bible Camp during the summer months of their retirement years.
Ruth was known in her and her husband’s family for her correspondence skills which served to keep the family members informed of important events as well as the mundane events of life. Reading was also a hobby.
The Bralliers moved from the farm into Curlew for several years then moved to Watertown, South Dakota in 1992. They resided at Benet Place, a retirement community. Mr. Brallier passed away in 1997. Mrs. Brallier moved to Evergreen Assisted Living in 1999 until ill health mandated a transition in 2004 to Prairie Lakes Care Center where she resided at the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, two infant grandsons, and a son-in-law.
She is survived by a son, Dr. David (Cheryl) Brallier of Fairfax, Virginia and a daughter, Sheryl Dean-(R. Peter) Kliegle of Watertown, South Dakota. Three grandchildren, Melanie (Loren) Gramberg and daughters, Hannah and Joelle of Watertown, South Dakota; Nathan (Kathryn) Dean of Bloomington, Minnesota and Rebekah (Jared) Rothfuss and sons, Joshua and Levi of Omaha, Nebraska. Surviving siblings are her twin sister, Ruby Jackson of Des Moines, Iowa; brother, Frank (Marie) Drown of Kansas City, Missouri; and sister, Elizabeth Asp of Cambridge, Minnesota. Also surviving are Mrs. Virgil Brallier of Malden, Massachusetts, Harold and Kathryn Duncanson of Modesto, California and many nieces and nephews.
