On July 14, 1969 Spence was united in marriage to Josephine Kinnetz in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Spence and Jo made their home in Emmetsburg where they owned and operated an upholstery business for twenty five years. Spence designed and patented the Tonneau cover for pickup boxes. They also developed Putter’s Paradise for the community which was an indoor miniature golf course. Prior to starting the upholstery business Spence had driven truck. Spence loved golfing and doing jigsaw puzzles. He truly looked forward to visits with his family. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially taking care of his flowers and mowing the grass with his riding lawn mower. Spence always had time to visit with people and he always seemed genuinely interested in their stories.
Spence was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church serving as an Elder and past financial secretary. He was very active in the ice cream social that the church held each year. He was a member of the American Legion in Graettinger and a life member of V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg. He operated the Bingo Hall for six years.
