Russel Esten Bohn, son of Arthur and Pearl (Cade) Bohn was born December 6, 1907, near Penfield, Illinois. His family moved to the Curlew area in 1915 and settled on a farm northwest of Curlew. He attended country school in Great Oak Township, Curlew High School, and graduated from Mallard High School in 1926. In high school he pole vaulted and ran hurdles.
On June 14, 1934, Russel married Verna Matthiesen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They established their home northeast of Curlew and later moved west of Curlew where they farmed until they moved to Curlew in 1972. They celebrated seventy years of marriage on June 14, 2004.
Russel was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Curlew and served on the trustee board for many years. He also was a member of the Ayrshrie School board. After moving to Curlew in 1972, he served on the city council and was mayor from 1996-2001.
He loved farming and gardening. Russel and Verna were often seen working together in their beautiful flower gardens. He loved having his family visit and shared stories of life during his early years. He was also an avid reader.
Russel passed away March 30, 2007 at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He was 99 years old.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Fred Quam, of El Paso, IL.
