Emmett Stanley Cox, son of Stanley and Bertha (Long) Cox, was born June 9, 1920 near Ayrshire, Iowa. He attended school in Ayrshire and graduated in 1938. After graduation, Emmett raised crops and livestock on a farm three and one quarter miles south of Ayrshire.
On November 19, 1944 Emmett was united in marriage to Verna Lucille Olson at the Methodist Church in Ruthven, Iowa. They lived on the farm for many years where they raised their six children. Emmett also held many other “second” jobs including hauling canned milk, hauling U.S. Mail and selling a correspondence course. They moved to Ruthven in 1986, but continued the hard work that defined Emmett’s life until failing health forced him to retire in 1997.
Emmett and Verna enjoyed traveling, frequently visiting their children and grandchildren and spending time in Florida during the winters.
Emmett died peacefully on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Verna. He is survived by two sisters, Eileen Backstrom of Ayrshire, and Shirley Larson of Florida; six children, Randolph Cox and his wife, Peggy of Prole, IA, Nancy Cox and her husband, Evan Lindsay of Atlanta, GA, Sherilyn Fuoss and her husband, Edwin of Whittemore, IA, Richard Cox and his wife, Patricia of Des Moines, IA, Robert Cox and his wife, Lynda of West Des Moines, IA, and Regan Cox and his wife, Rochelle of Burnsville, MN; twelve grandchildren, Scott and Philip Fuoss, Joel Cox, Mark and Julia Lindsay, Nicholas, Kristina and Alexis Cox, Kristin and Kelly Van De Kreeke, and Cassandra and Delaney Cox; and two great grandchildren, Gavin and Harper Lindsay.
