Gertrude Pearl Cherry, daughter of George and Petrina (Paulson) Nelson, was born August 31, 1910. She grew up on a farm in Great Oak Township with five brothers and one sister. Gertrude was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. She graduated from Emmetsburg High School. Following graduation she worked at McDonald’s 5 & 10 Store.
On July 16, 1936 Gertrude was united in marriage to Otis Cherry. They made their home in Rodman. To this union two children were born, Robert George and Barbara Ann. In 1952 Otis and Gertrude moved to Emmetsburg. In 1953 Otis passed away just shortly after making their home in Emmetsburg.
Gertrude was a gracious hostess to all who came to her home and she loved trying new recipes for her family and friends. She was a very devoted wife and mother caring for her family. She enjoyed reading and making quilts which each of her children and grandchildren received. Gertrude was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church and Church Circle in Emmetsburg. She truly enjoyed helping with the Scandinavian Tea each year.
Gertrude moved to Lakeside five years ago and while living there she enjoyed playing cards and Bingo, going to devotions and visiting with friends. After working for so many years she missed being around people.
Gertrude died Monday, December 12, 2005 at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otis; her son, Robert Cherry; brothers, Clarence, Alfred, Grant Paul, Elmer, and Albert Raymond Nelson; sisters, Anna Anderson and Cora and Marie in infancy.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Naugle and her husband, Burdell of Emmetsburg, IA; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Cherry of Milford; grandchildren, Corbi (Cherry) Jacobson, Cheryl (Cherry) Hoover, Michele (Naugle) Urness and David Naugle; great grandchildren, Jlynn (Jacobson) Postma, Joshua Jacobson, Adam Urness, Molly Urness, Lee Hoover, Abby Urness, Madelyn Naugle, Sam Urness, and Hunter Naugle; great great grandchild, Caleb Postma; sister-in-law, Hiroko Nelson; many nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
