Ida Elnora Cody, daughter of Andrew and Clara (Benson) Berkland, was born July 2, 1907 near Fenton, Iowa. She attended rural schools in the area. Ida’s mother was bedridden with arthritis so Ida stayed home to cook and care for her family for a year between seventh and eighth grade. She then returned to school and graduated from eighth grade.
On December 21, 1927 Ida was united in marriage to Arthur B. Cody in Cylinder, Iowa. To this union five children were born. Ida and Arthur resided in rural Cylinder for several years. Following Arthur’s death, Ida moved into Cylinder where she lived until 1978. She then moved to Emmetsburg making her home at Lakeside Lutheran Home.
Ida was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she was active in Church Women’s Organizations and Bible Studies. She also enjoyed attending painting and ceramic classes when she was able.
Ida died Sunday, November 20, 2005 at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Kenneth Paul Cody; two grandchildren, Valerie Christianson and Roger Jurgens; great grandchild, Alden Liebert; and brothers, Ernest (Sylvia), Bert (Leone), Amos (Pearl), Raymond, Bennie (Irene) and Clarence (Maxine) Berkland.
She is survived by her children, Cora Ann Lufkin and her husband, Dean of Mesa, AZ, Eleanor Mae Christianson and her husband, James of Bode, IA, Iva Ardell Jurgens and her husband, Ronald of Johnston, IA, Arnold Claire Cody and his wife, Margie of Phoenix, AZ and daughter-in-law, Lois Cody of Emmetsburg, IA; twenty one grandchildren, David (Patsy), Jon (Linda), Becky (Steve), Mark (Connie), Steven (Joni), Kim, Kathy (Ron), Bob, Chuck, Kenneth (Helen), Joe (Jenny), Kevin (Julie), Kent (Karen), Amy (Carl), Allan (Nancy), Brenda, Monica (Lyle), Mike (Cindy), Rodney (Deeanna), Brian and Jeffrey (Leslie); great grandchildren, Justin (Toye), Katie (John), Rachael, Caroline, Angela, Joshua, Dustin, Lisa, Jon, Lee, Jordan, Halie, Cody, Caila, Connor, Andrea (David), Melissa (Allen), Amy (Chad), David, Margie, Laura Natalie, Steven, Angela, Christina, London, Adrianne, Stephanie, Nathan, Jessica, Matthew, Kristen, Ryan, Cody, Anna, David, Hannah, Maya, Jacob, Seth, Samuel, Alyssa (Mike), Mikhala, Morgan, Marin, Paige and Adelaide; great great grandchildren, Keaton, Owen, Skyla, Savanna, Jadyn, Mariah, Amy Jean, Thor, Madison, Anna, Bailey, Logan, ; brothers, Oscar Berkland and his wife, Ruth, Melvin Berkland and his wife, Violet; a sister, Eunice Purdy and her husband, Richard; sister-in-law, Mrs. Raymond (Agatha) Berkland and Mrs. Melvin (Ethel) Cody; as well as many other relatives and friends.
