Alma Nora Burns, daughter of Andrew and Malinda (Hoverstein) Nelson, was born October 22, 1910 at their farm home near Depew, Iowa. She was delivered by her grandmother “Besta”, as were all of her siblings. She attended country school near Depew and graduated from Emmetsburg High School. During high school, Alma took normal training so that she could teach school. She taught in a one room country school until she was married.
In February 1936 Alma was united in marriage to Robert Burns at the Assumption Catholic Rectory in Emmetsburg. To this union three children were born. Alma taught in California during WWII, and after until 1950. Returning to Emmetsburg in 1950, she taught again in country schools and in Rodman. Alma was elected County Clerk of Court in 1958, serving until 1980. Alma was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg.
Alma died Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Norman, Charlie, Burt, Ted, and Selmer Nelson; sisters, Ella Sampson, Anna Mitchell and Clara Koons.
She is survived by her children, Bill Burns of South Elgin, IL, Almalea Allen of South Elgin, IL and Suzanne Simington of Emmetsburg, IA; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; a sister, Mae Johnson of Sioux Falls, SD; as well as many other relatives and friends.
