Dale Edward Bohn, 62, left us to reside with his Lord and Savior on July 30th, 2005.
Dale was born to Russel and Verna (Matthiesen) Bohn on November 22, 1942 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He attended Ayrshire Schools, graduating in 1960. While in school, he excelled in sports, and acquired the nickname “Moose”. Despite the fact that Ayrshire had no football team, he was recruited to play the position of “back” for Emmetsburg Community College; he attended for one year. During his school years, he was well known for his sense of humor and general good nature. His teacher, according to some of his stories, didn’t always share his appreciation of a good prank. He and cohorts were once kept “after school” until 8:30….P.M.
He certainly managed at some point to impress one particular classmate, Cleo Rouse to whom he was married three years after their high school graduation, on November 30, 1963.
Dale and Cleo joined his Father and older brother in the family farming operation near Curlew. Just short of one year later, they welcomed the first of their three daughters into the family.
He continued to excel at the sports he so loved, playing on community fast-pitch softball teams and awing his daughters with his ability to hit the ball onto the roof of the music room of the Ayrshire school building.
He passed along his love of sports to his wife and daughters; who spent hours playing catch, pitching, receiving “lessons” in the game of football, and dissecting the latest college recruits. Dale was a huge ISU Cyclone fan, attending most home football games since the early 70’s...which should tell you something about his sense of loyalty! He also loved the game of golf, and gave a great deal of his time and energy to improving the local Country Club, where he recently served as President. Dale also served as a director on the Ayrshire School Board.
Dale had an immense love of learning. During the winters, he actually “read” the encyclopedia...all of it. To those who wonder why he always beat you in games of “Trivial Pursuit”...you now have your answer. Don’t worry, he beat us too; we just had the advantage of knowing “why!” He also loved difficult jigsaw puzzles, and spent hours with his daughters and grandchildren working on them.
Dad greatly enjoyed the outdoors, as evidenced by his oldest daughter’s “first trip out of the house” which was duck hunting at four weeks old. His youngest daughter shares his love of hunting. He always maintained as much natural habitat as possible on his land so that the native birds and wildlife could thrive.
He was also a wonderful farmer. He loved this Iowa land that his Father and ancestors had so carefully chosen and, with Cleo’s constant help, cared for it as a good steward. He also quietly built up one of the largest flocks of sheep in the state. His lambs, sold to 4-Hers, have won several awards at local fairs. We all remember well moving the sheep from farm to farm to get to the fresh pasture. We would drive them down the gravel road for a good mile at times, and Dad was always just certain that they would “remember” where they were supposed to go. Of course, the curious sheep just wandered off in all directions as three little girls and Mom attempted to stop them.
But, most of all, Dale was a good Christian man, and a tremendous husband and father. He was a very active life-long member of the Curlew Baptist Church, serving as Trustee for many years. He also was instrumental in the construction and design of the new Church building. He knew the Lord Jesus as his Savior; so we, his family, take great comfort in knowing that this difficult parting is temporary. We rejoice in the knowledge that he is free of pain, and free of the worries and sorrow that we who are left behind must endure.
Dale is survived by his beloved wife, Cleo; his father, Russel Bohn; his daughters, Denise Andreas, Susan Bohn and Lori Wickman. He is also survived by his sons-in-law, Scott Andreas and Jerry Wickman, who has been his partner in the farming operation for the last seven years. He also has two much adored grandchildren in Josie and Zane Wickman.
His sister, Marilyn and her husband, Dale’s close friend, Fred Quam, also survive; as well as his nephews and nieces: Ron (Darla) Bohn and their children, Richard (Erin) Bohn, and Mandy Bohn; Steve (Cheryl) Bohn and their daughters, Erica and Alyssa; Shelly (Steve) Haase and their daughters, Madeline and Sydney; Sharon Quam; and Brian (Christy) Quam. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Fern Wells.
Also surviving are his Aunt Dorothy (Lawrence) Gravlund, Uncle Rusty (Esther) Matthiesen, Great Aunts Edra Hubbell and Doris Johnson, and many other wonderful relatives and friends.
He was greeted in Heaven by his mother, Verna, who left us in February; his brother, Ramon; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bert and Tillie Rouse, and his grandparents.
