Richard “Dick” Brown, son of W.H. and Mary G. (Donahue) Brown, was born November 10, 1924 near Ruthven, Iowa. He attended country school in the area graduating from Ruthven High School.
On December 29, 1947 Dick was united in marriage to Bernadine Gappa at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa. To this union four children were born.
Dick farmed his entire life in Palo Alto County. Their farm has been in the Brown family since 1883. Dick farmed the Brown farm until his retirement in 1992 when he and Bernie moved into Ruthven.
Dick was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church having served on numerous boards. He served on the school board in Ruthven and the Ruthven Oil Company Board. Dick was an avid Hawkeye fan and attended many of the games in Iowa City.
Dick died Sunday, June 26, 2005 at the Ruthven Community Care Center at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Kay Hyde; and a brother, Bob Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadine of Ruthven, IA; his children, Tom and Kathy Brown of Iowa City, IA, Ted and Carolyn Brown of Storm Lake, IA, Trish Brown of Urbandale, IA and Mike and Ruth Brown of Ruthven, IA; ten grandchildren, Meredith Mauro, Tyler Brown, Ben Ford, Scott Brown, Megan Brown, Andy Ford, Tim Brown, Ashley Brown, Allie Brown, and Nate Brown; one great grandchild, Drew Mauro; three brothers, John Brown of Emmetsburg, IA, Bill Brown of Ruthven, IA, Jim Brown of Omaha, NE and Don Brown of Des Moines, IA; a sister, Rosemary Sneeringer of Seattle, WA; as well as many other relatives and friends.
