Leota Maude Barkve, daughter of Orin “Lee” and Edna Viola (Hitchler) McQuown, was born November 28, 1915 in Monroe, Iowa. She attended Vernon Township #6 School and then Emmetsburg High School where she graduated.

On March 11, 1935 Leota was united in marriage to Norman Barkve at the Lutheran Parsonage in Emmetsburg. To this union nine children were born.

Leota and Norman were in the restaurant business for several years together. Leota also worked at the Emmetsburg Hatchery and Berkleys. She was employed at the Palo Alto County Hospital for thirteen years.

Leota was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She was a wonderful musician, playing several instruments, and she loved to sing. Leota enjoyed gardening and canning the produce she raised. She did painting and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Leota was also a sports fan especially when it came to the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings. She loved taking walks and being outside.

Leota passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman; two sons, Kenneth and Alan Barkve; a daughter, Marilyn Lampe; three sisters, Beulah Olson, twin sister, Leona Knudson and Rose Reeves; four brothers, Ralph, Thomas, George and Leland, McQuown.

She is survived by her children, Norman Barkve, Jr. (Patti) of Tallahassee, FL, Jerold Barkve (Pat) of Tullahoma, TN, James Barkve (Jean) of Chico, CA, Linda Weber (Wilmer) of Graettinger, IA, Carol Hellickson of Flagstaff, AZ and Jeanine Larson of Rim rock, AZ; seventeen grandchildren; thirty one great grandchildren; a brother, Lee McQuown of Curlew, IA; a sister, Clara Rowlet of Emmetsburg, IA; a son-in-law, Clifford Lampe of Lakeport, CA; a daughter-in-law, Monique Barkve of Sacramento, CA; as well as many other relatives and friends.
