Harold Gene Coleman, son of Frank D. and Maude E. (Smith) Coleman, was born August 20, 1933 in Ruthven, Iowa. He attended school in Ruthven graduating from Ruthven Community School in 1952.
On October 2, 1954 Gene was united in marriage to Nola Carlson in Yankton, South Dakota. To this union five children were born. Gene and Nola made their home in Emmetsburg where Gene worked for the Department of Transportation. He was with the D.O.T. for thirty three years before semi-retiring. Gene did landscaping and snow removal for several years as well as driving truck for Ready Mix. He was a man that had to be working at something.
Gene was a member of First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg and also Kiwanis. He enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was younger but Gene especially enjoyed playing cards with his family. Gene was proud of his yard and always made sure it was well cared for. He was an individual that was always trying new things and was constantly learning. He enjoyed attending theater productions with Barb.
Gene died Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 74. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nola; his son, Mark; a sister, Kathleen Johnson; brothers-in-law, Larry Lee and Darius Malm.
He is survived by his children, Randy Coleman of Washington, IA, Mike Coleman and his wife, Ruth of Greenville, IA, Joe Coleman of Sioux Falls, SD and Tim Coleman of Spencer, IA; twelve grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence Coleman and his wife, Bernadine of Ruthven, IA; sisters, Marlys Lee of Pequot Lake, MN and Florence Malm of Emmetsburg, IA; a very dear friend, Barb Schleisman; a brother-in-law, Harold Johnson of Lake Havasu City, AZ; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
