Lyman Devilla Bailey, Sr., son of Clifford Devilla and Florence (Morse) Bailey, was born April 14, 1916 in Laurens, Iowa. He received his education in the Laurens school district.
On March 1, 1942 Lyman was united in marriage to Vergene Lewis in Laurens. To this union three children were born. Lyman and Vergene made their home in Laurens where Lyman was employed at Ziegler Mobile Station. He also farmed for several years until his health forced him to retire in 1964. Lyman worked for many years with his wife, Vergene at the nursing home in Laurens. He also served as interim administrator at the Good Samaritan Home in Algona.
Lyman was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Five Island Campers Club. He was active in the Laurens Senior Center and enjoyed his Downtown Coffee Group. Lyman was a member of the First Christian Church in Laurens and the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society.
Lyman loved his family and especially treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren. He enjoyed farming, fishing and playing cards. He and Vergene truly loved their camping trips as well as the Northwest Iowa Bus tours they took throughout the United States and Canada. Lyman and Vergene were blessed with spending over fifty years together and were able to renewtheir marriage vows.
Lyman died Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue, Iowa at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vergene on July 9, 1994; sisters and brothers, Joy, Kenny, Mildred, Don and Jewell.
He is survived by his children, Myrna Jean (Ivan) Heimbuck of Gatesville, TX, Wanda Rae (Ralph) Wedgewood of Salina, KS and Lyman Devilla (Dixie) Bailey, Jr. of Bellevue, IA; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a brother, Jim (Bea) Bailey of Marathon, IA; a sister, Doris Richardson of Laurens, IA; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
