Norma Katharine Beddow, daughter of Claude and Emma (Tice) Mullen, was born March 29, 1920 in Waucoma, Iowa. She attended school in Ayrshire graduating in 1937.
On April 2, 1938 Norma was united in marriage to Dale Beddow in Spencer, Iowa. To this union five children were born. Norma and Dale farmed in the Ayrshire and Ruthven areas for over forty years before moving to Ruthven in 1980. Norma was active on the farm driving tractor, picking up rocks or doing any other task that Dale needed assistance with. Normie, as Dale liked to call her, was a devoted wife and mother and was always willing to help in any way she could. She also worked at the Clay County Fair for twenty six years at Stub’s Ranch Kitchen. Norma and Dale enjoyed sixty five years together and were always ready to attend dances in the area. They both truly enjoyed life. Norma was never one to complain about things and accepted what she was given. What a wonderful attitude and outlook.
Norma was an active member of the United Methodist Church and church circle in Ruthven. She was also a member of the Ruthven American Legion Auxiliary and Silver Lake Cemetery Society. Norma liked playing cards and was a member of the Bid and Bye Card Club as well as her Bridge Club.
Norma died Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale on April 11, 2003; two brothers, Leonard and Bill Mullen; and a granddaughter, Abby.
She is survived by her children, R. Dean Beddow and his friend, Leona Chadwick of Canyon, TX, Billy Beddow and his wife, Marilyn of Lennox, SD, Donna Thompson of Sioux Falls, SD, Danny Beddow and his wife, Lisa of Spencer, IA and Sue Roste and her husband, Rich of Harrisburg, SD; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren; a brother, Bob Mullen and his wife, Ruth of Emmetsburg, IA; as well as many other relatives and friends.
