Alice Catherine Simons, daughter of James William and Mary (Kliegl) Conway, was born April 22, 1915 in Fairfield Township, between Cylinder and Depew, Iowa. She attended a one room country school through sixth grade. She graduated from St. Maryís Academy in Emmetsburg on June 3, 1932 at the age of seventeen. Alice then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and later Buena Vista College in Storm Lake receiving a degree in education.
On June 7, 1941 Alice was united in marriage to Vernon Simons at the parsonage in Whittemore, Iowa. To this union two daughters were born.
Alice taught for many years beginning in a one room school house progressing through to modern day special education classes. During WWII Alice operated their bowling alley while her husband, Curly served in the United States Navy.
Alice was a member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg where she was active in Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Emmetsburg. Alice loved to play cards with family and friends. She crocheted many afghans for her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed attending sporting events and concerts that her grandchildren participated in. Alice loved to go fishing.
Alice died Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Conway; her husband, Vernon (Curly); brothers, James, Leo, Lawrence, Francis, Eugene, and William; and a sister, Mary.
She is survived by her daughters, Ann Waldstein and her husband, Brian of Sioux Rapids, IA and Kathy Bradfield and her husband, Marvin of Atlantic, IA; six grandchildren, Eric Waldstein and his wife, Hillary of Solon, IA, Sarah Curry and her husband, Jason of Ames, IA, Jeffrey Waldstein of Woodward, IA, Michael Lensch and his wife, Melissa of Fort Dodge, IA, Sean Waldstein and his wife, Amanda of Urbandale, IA and Alicia Garrity and her husband, Dan of Waukee, IA; one great grandchild, Ryleigh Waldstein; brothers, Joseph Conway of Villa Park, CA and Robert Conway of Huntington Beach, CA; sisters, Bernice (Connie) Conway of Palm Springs, CA and Veronica Henely of Palm Desert, CA; as well as many other relatives and friends.
