Ray A. Bates, 80, died Sunday, July 10, 2005, at Indiana Masonic Home Hospital in Franklin. He was a resident of Franklin and a former resident of Bradenton, Fla., and Lake Okeechobee, Fla., from 1967 to 1993.

He was born March 29, 1925, in Indianapolis. His parents were Clyde A. and Marjorie (Voris) Bates. He married Roberta M. Miller on May 20, 1943, in Whiteland. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jaclynn S. and David McKell of Tampa, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald E. and Celine Bates of Morgantown; four granddaughters, Andrea L. Amich, Debra L. Stout, Jodee D. Decker and Jeanna L. Byers; two grandsons, James W. Byers and David H. McKell III; and seven great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Center Grove High School in 1943 and attended Central Business College in Indianapolis for three years.

He retired in 1988 as a general manager for Florida Pacific Lumber Co. after 15 years of service. Prior to that he worked 15 years for Greenwood Lumber Co.

He was a member of Waverly Masonic Lodge 615 and Indianapolis Scottish Rite. He attended Banta Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing. He enjoyed basketball and had played basketball at Center Grove.

He served with the U.S. Navy as a boatswain’s mate second class during World War II from 1943 to 1947.

The Rev. Cheryl Garbe will conduct a graveside service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home, Cremation and Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown.
