Maurice R. Baxter, 88, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital Beech Grove. He was a resident of Whiteland.

He was born June 17, 1916, in Birdseye. His parents were Melvin R. and Estella (Comstock) Baxter. He married Kathleen (Nelson) Baxter on July 29, 1939, in Indianapolis. She preceded him in death July 26, 1999. Survivors include a daughter, Connie Baxter Melahn of Indianapolis; a son, Thomas Lee Baxter of Greenwood; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Douglas Vincent Baxter; and three brothers, George, Paul and Nobie Baxter.

He was a 1934 graduate of Birdseye High School.

He was employed in the hardware business most of his adult life, working for Al Wilem Hardware in Indianapolis for several years and then as store manager with Ace Hardware in Southern Plaza for 15 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Whiteland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6978 and St. Anthony’s American Legion Post.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening, especially growing and caring for his roses.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, attaining the rank of master sergeant in the 722nd Railway Operation Battalion and the 6th Armored Division. He received four Bronze Stars.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Birdseye Cemetery in Birdseye. Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation and Personalization Center in Morgantown is handling arrangements.
