William J. McDonald, 82, of Cortland and formerly of Warren, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at his home at Lake Vista Retirement Community. He was born April 4, 1927 in Coverdale, Pa., the son of Frank and Catherine (Powlowski) McDonald.

Mr. McDonald served in the U.S. Army and worked as a laborer at Grinnell. A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, he enjoyed fishing and telling jokes.

Surviving are a sister, Sr. Juliemarie McDonald, SND of Chardon; a brother, Robert McDonald of New York; six nieces: Valerie Pinney of Tennessee, Vanessa (Anthony) Brocco of Warren, Rita Gaumer of Virginia, Rhonda (Ken) Sudimack of Texas, Lauren (Alan) Burge of Akron, and Louise (Steve) Cone of New York; and a nephew, Robert (Elizabeth) McDonald of Georgia. Preceding him in death are his parents and a sister, Barbara Pinney.

Services are 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 21, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 232 Seneca N.E., Warren, Ohio 44481, with Fr. Bernard Schmalzried officiating. Interment at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland will follow. Friends may call 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday and 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at McFarland & Son Funeral Home in Warren.
