Henry Mayford “Bob” Gandee, 79, formerly of Clendenin, West Virginia, died October 20, 2011 at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, West Virginia of complications from Alzheimer’s.
Bob was a 1950 graduate of Clendenin High School, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a 1959 graduate of Glenville State College. On September 2, 1959, he married the former Barbara Ann Frederick of Weston and began a teaching and coaching career at Buckeye Junior High School and Buckeye High School in Medina, Ohio. After two years, he returned to Clendenin, West Virginia, where he taught, coached, and retired from Elkview Junior High School. Upon retirement Bob continued to coach as an assistant at Herbert Hoover High School and teach as a substitute in Kanawha County. He was also a former basketball official of the Kanawha Southern Board with over 30 years of experience, a football official, a member of the Kanawha County Association of Retired School Employees, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Clendenin.
In addition to his wife of 52 years, he is survived by three sons, Stephen Frederick Gandee and wife Tamra of Jane Lew, Thomas Henry Gandee of Anchorage, Alaska, and Joseph Robert Gandee and fiancé, Tamberly Dennison of Fairmont; grandchildren, Stephenee and Andrew of Jane Lew and Nathan of Anchorage, Alaska; sister, Helen Louise Hall and husband Bob; brother, Larry Donald Gandee and wife Pam; and several nieces and nephews.
He was born to the late Henry Dennis and Birdie Martha Carter Gandee. Bob was also preceded in death by his brothers, Dennis Carlton Gandee, Garland Ray Gandee, James Clinton Gandee; sister, Patricia Ann Settle; and brother-in-law, Andy Settle.
Bob’s funeral service will be 6 pm Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Matics Funeral Home in Clendenin with Pastor Gary Walker officiating and American Legion Post #61 performing military rites. Burial and a graveside service will be 2 pm Monday, October 24, 2011 at Mount Hermon Cemetery in Buckhannon, WV. His family will receive friends 4 to 6 pm Sunday at the funeral home.
