Westfield - Patricia Ann (Minton) Newell, 76, passed away peacefully after a brief illness November 14th. Born in Jamestown, NY on April 26, 1929 to George Pullman and Mary Vail Minton, she grew up on the family’s dairy farm in Westfield. She was the Valedictorian of the Westfield Academy and Central School graduating class in 1947, and attended Rochester Institute of Technology studying Food Administration, graduating in 1951 with honors.
After graduation, she managed the catering kitchens of The Town and Country Restaurant in New York City. After returning to Westfield for a more peaceful life, she married Robert W. Newell, whom she had met after his Marine Corps service, on February 14th, 1953. For 15 years, while raising their children, she worked at Cardell’s Antiques, and expanded on her hobby of collecting antiques. The next 18 years she worked for the Westfield Electric Department, retiring in 1996.
Always a supporter of the Westfield community, Pat served on numerous boards and committees. She spent more than 10 years on the Westfield School Board, serving as a member, as well as officer, culminating in board Presidency.
She also served on the Westfield Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, and as Secretary/Treasurer, helped implement the hospital’s expansion in 1984.
Pat served on the Board of Directors of the Chautauqua County Historical Society, Westfield Counseling Service, Benjamin Prescott Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Patterson Library, the Westfield Cemetery Association, and the YWCA.
Most recently, she was a founding member and the treasurer of the Lincoln- Bedell Statue Committee. She was also a deaconess of the First Presbyterian Church.
An enthusiastic Boston Terrier lover, Pat enjoyed gardening, horses, history, bowling, traveling, shopping, cooking and visiting with friends.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by Robert Wallace Newell, her husband of 37 years, who died in 1990. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Henderson of Philadelphia, her brothers, James Hiller Minton of Barcelona and George Vail Minton of Florida; three children, Heather Gillies of Clifton, VA, Tadd Newell of Mayville, NY and Hilary Newell of Nantucket, MA.; seven grandchildren and step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, November 19 from 1-5 at her home in Westfield. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wacs Trust and Agency, Patricia Newell Scholarship Fund, c/o WACS, E. Main St., Westfield, NY 14787.
