CREMATION

Cremation is another form of disposition.  If a family chooses cremation without embalming, out of respect, the funeral director washes and dresses the deceased.  The body is then placed in a casket or other appropriate container.  That container is then placed in the retort.  Inside the retort, the body is subjected to a fire and kept at extremely high temperatures.  The actual process takes approximately four hours.  The remaining bone fragments are mechanically reduced to smaller granules.  The cremated remains are then placed into an urn or an appropriate container.  Once this process has occured, it is the responsibility of the family to decide whether the remains should be kept, buried, or scattered.
