| | | ROBERTA PHELPS AUGUST, age 73 years, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Wednesday morning, January 11, 2006 at the Davis Memorial Hospital. She had been in declining health.
She was born Monday, May 16, 1932 at Sommerset, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Bennie C. Phelps and Hulda Stodgsdill Phelps. She was twice married. First, to Lawrence Sanders who preceded her in death in 1983 and second, to George August who preceded her in death in 1990.
Surviving her are four sons, Larry E. Sanders and wife, Sue, Franklin, North Carolina, James L. Sanders, Elkins, West Virginia, Tim August and wife, Jennifer, Cedar Springs, Michigan, and Shane August and wife, Shelly, Elkins, West Virginia, four daughters, Francis Ann Long, Griffin, Georgia, Linda G. Sanders, Tampa, Florida, Leanna Sanders and companion, Randy, Elkins, West Virginia, and Lysa Gearhart-August, Barberton, Ohio, fourteen grandchildren, Shannon, Ashley, Samantha, Tracy, Eric, Carissa Jason, and Kelly Sanders, Elizabeth and Danielle August, Marla, Georgie, and Roger Long, and James Gearhart, fifteen great grandchildren, and by her long time companion, John “Butch” Kyle.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husbands were two brothers, James and Donald Phelps, and two sisters, Mary Schreffler, and Karen Swartz. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She attended the schools of Sommerset, Kentucky and worked as a cook for the Randolph County Schools for many years retiring in 1991. She was a volunteer and member of the H. W. Daniel’s Post #29, American Legion Auxiliary and the Tygart Valley Post #3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Mrs. August’s request for cremation was honored. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2006 at 1 PM at the H.W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion.
