| | | CLARENCE DALE “C.D.” ARMSTRONG, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Tuesday evening, March 15, 2005 at the Davis Memorial Hospital. Death was sudden and unexpected.
Mr. Armstrong was born at Marlinton, West Virginia a son of the late Charles Woodford Armstrong and Roberta “Bertie” Summerfield Armstrong. He was from a pioneer family of Randolph County.
Mr. Armstrong received his diploma from Elkins High School with the Class of 1947. A Veteran of World War II, Mr. Armstrong enlisted in the U. S. Navy at age 17. After basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, he was assigned to out going units. He took the examination for the Naval Air Corps, was accepted and assigned to USB-ATUI, serving as a gunner on an SB2C Hell Diver Aircraft. He was honorably discharged and on February 5, 1947 at Buckhannon, West Virginia, he was married to the former Pauline Collett, who survives.
Mr. Armstrong attended the West Virginia State Police Academy and was a graduate of the Alderson-Broaddus College – University of Hard Knocks. He was a tractor-trailer driver and a pipe threader with the Neil & Claypool Company at Montgomery, WV. He worked as a brakeman, conductor and yard foreman for the Western Maryland Railroad for twelve years. He was a Salesman and Business Man, having worked at Home, Inc. and S&S Appliance Market. He started A & G Appliance Mart on Third Street in Elkins, which he owned and operated for thirty-eight years.
Mr. Armstrong was a candidate for the West Virginia House of Delegates and a member of the Randolph County Chamber of Commerce. He was active with the schools of Randolph County, being a Past President of both the First Ward School PTA and the Elkins Bands Auxiliary.
Mr. Armstrong was active in Civic Organizations, being a past Exalted Ruler of the Elkins Lodge # 1135, B.P.O.E. He was a member of the Elkins Lodge # 108, A. F. & A.M., was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Master Mason, a York Rite Shriner, a member of the Red Fez Patrol, Osiris Temple and was current President of the Tygart Valley Shrine Club. He was a member of the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion.
He loved music and had an extensive collection of World War II – Era Recordings. He was a former member of the West Virginia Highlanders Bagpipe Band and in 1989 he founded and was a charter member of the Osiris Shrine Oriental Band of Elkins in which he served as the Drum Major and Musical Director.
Mr. Armstrong had traveled extensively throughout the world, having visited Europe, the Caribbean and Hawaii on numerous occasions. He was behind the Iron Curtain before the fall of the Berlin Wall. He loved gardening and could often be seen tending his plants and making improvements on his properties in Elkins.
He was elected to the Elkins City Council for First Ward twice, the first being in 1981 and the second being in 2003, which seat he held at the time of his death. He was a Methodist by faith and a member of the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by one son, Charles “David” Armstrong and wife Sherry Jo, Elkins, five grandchildren, Stephanie Armstrong-Shank and husband Richard, Elkins, Eric Allen Armstrong, Morgantown, Daniel S. Armstrong, Elkins, Anna Grace Armstrong, Elkins, Brian Dale George, Belington, four brothers, Charles Armstrong, Brentwood, California, Jack D. Armstrong, Granite Bay, California, Rockwood Summerfield, Leesburg, Florida, Bruce Summerfield, Powder Springs, Georgia, four sisters, Gloria Kelley, Elkins, Agnes Vivo, Grass Valley, California, Monofay Bond, Sparks, Nevada, Dixie Taylor, Mill Creek and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents are one daughter, Michele Colette Armstrong George, one great granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Chewning, three brothers, Herbert, Stanley and Norman Armstrong and three sisters, Eva Giudici, Shirley Leary and Phyliss MacArthur.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Saturday. On Saturday, at 7:30 PM, at the funeral home, the Elkins Lodge # 1135, B.P.O.E. will conduct ritualistic services. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Sunday, March 20, 2005 at 1 PM. The Reverend Richard S. Gibson will officiate and entombment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman, West Virginia, where the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military rites and the Elkins Lodge # 108, A. F. & A. M. will conduct Masonic Graveside Rites. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 122 South High Street, Morgantown, West Virginia 26501.
