| | | WILLIAM KENT BARNARD, age 92 years, a lifelong resident of Elkins, West Virginia, departed this life Monday evening, February 2, 2004, at the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, where he had been a patient since May 2002.
He was born Sunday, September 3, 1911, at Elkins, West Virginia, a son of the late Harry Notley Barnard and Stella Harper Barnard. His grandparents were among some of the first settlers of Randolph County. On July 25, 1942, at Norfolk, Virginia, he was married to the former Maudaline Montgomery, who survives. They had celebrated sixty-one years of marriage. Also surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth Miller and husband Paul, Gahanna, Ohio, Jean Jones and husband Glen, Elkins, one sister, Martha Barnard Culp, Willoughby, Ohio, three grandsons, Jeremy and Chad Miller, Gahanna, Ohio, Darin Jones and wife Beth, Crown Point, Indiana, one granddaughter, Lauryn Jones, Elkins, one great granddaughter, Megan Jones, Crown Point, Indiana and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents are three brothers, Notley, Charles and Paul Barnard.
Mr. Barnard was a graduate of Elkins High School, with the Class of 1929 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Davis and Elkins College in 1934, when Eleanor Roosevelt was commencement speaker. He was a member of the XOD Fraternity and was president of his graduating class. He worked as a partner in the family business, Barnard Plumbing and Heating Company, during his school years and until he joined the United States Naval Reserves in 1942. He then served as a Lieutenant in the Pacific during World War II. Afterwards he joined the Valley Supply Company at Elkins, working for nearly thirty years as their buyer and in charge of plumbing, retiring in 1976. He was able to enjoy many years in retirement as an avid golfer and reader and taking trips with the Elkins-Randolph County Senior Center.
He was reared in the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a devoted member of the Lacey Bible Class for many years. In later life, he transferred his membership to the First United Methodist Church, where he and his wife have been faithful members. He was a member of the H. W. Daniel’s Post # 29, American Legion, was a life member of the Elkins Lodge # 1135, B.P.O.E., having been a past Exalted Ruler. The Elks honored him in 2002, for sixty-five years of continuous service.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins, on Saturday, February 7, 2004, from 12 Noon to 2 PM, the funeral hour. The Reverend Doctor Ellis E. Conley will officiate and interment will follow at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins, West Virginia.
