| | | EVA LENA SMITH ADAMS, age 101 years, a resident of Bemis, WV for eighty-one years and more recently a resident of Moundsville, WV departed this life Monday morning, November 24, 2008 at the East Ohio Regional Hospital at Martins Ferry, OH with a prayer and in the arms of her great granddaughter Michelle. She passed peacefully to her Lord and Savior.
She was born Sunday, July 7, 1907 at Riverton, Pendleton County, WV a daughter of the late Mae Harper Thompson and step father Sherd.
Surviving are daughter in law, Helen L. Adams, Moundsville; grandson Rick Adams and wife Sue, Parkersburg; and their daughters and families, Letitia Walker and husband Joey and children Tori, Adam, Braden, Kendra, Maxwell and Isabella all of Vincent, OH; Kristen Johnson and husband Tony and children Carly and Miles, all of Ashland, KY; and Jacqie Sperling and husband Ben, Wappingers Falls, NY; granddaughter, Sue White, Moundsville and her sons, Levi, Arlington, VA; Grant, Morgantown; and Tom White, Moundsville; Great grandson, Thomas R. Adams, Phoenix, AZ, granddaughter, Debbie Adams, Bemis and her daughter, Michelle Carpenter and husband Tony and their daughter, Rain, all of Shadyside, OH and four step great grandsons, Chris, Greg Doug and Jon Wood.
Preceding her in death are her husband of sixty-two years, Kennie E. Adams, their only son, Jack and grandson, John L., three brothers, Truman, Richard and Billy Thompson, four sisters, Susie Hedrick, Myrtle Jones, Hilda Phares and Genevia Thompson and several nieces and nephews. The family circle is now completed.
Eva worked as a food server in Baltimore, MD and retired from the Randolph County Schools as a cook at the Bemis School. She prepared many delicious school lunches on a wood cook stove. She made homemade bread every day and other favorites such as creamed chicken and biscuits, apple betty and hot dog sauce.
Eva and Kennie always graciously welcomed many people into their home from both near and far. Many people still maintain ties with Bemis, owning homes and camps or just visiting as a result of Eva, Kennie, and Jack’s friendship and hospitality.
In past years Eva would open the Bemis Church on Sundays, often she being the only one there to worship. Always a lady, she enjoyed shopping, eating out, knitting, sewing and visiting with friends and family.
In recent years Eva made her home in Moundsville, WV with her caretakers, Sue, Helen, Michelle and special little helper Rain. Also helping with Granny, as he lovingly called her, was Ricky. She will be missed by her extended family and many friends.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 7 PM, Friday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 2 PM. The Reverend Nolan Turner will officiate and interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens, (formerly the I.O.O.F. Cemetery) at Elkins, WV.
