DOROTHY ELLEN GROW ARMENTROUT, age 85 years a resident of the Holly Meadows Community, Parsons, WV., departed this life Friday evening July 13, 2007 at the Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins.
She was born Monday, May 25, 1922 at Thomas, WV., a daughter of the late Earnest Earl Grow and Blanche Elizabeth Perks Grow. On June 15, 1941 at Oakland, Md., she was married to Melvin Glen Armentrout, who preceded her in death February 25, 1999.
Surviving are one son; Robert Earl “Bob” Armentrout and wife “Beni” of Elkins, two daughters; Elizabeth “Betty” Shipp and husband Robert and Patricia Dilly and husband Frank, all of Holly Meadows, one brother; William Grow of Lexington, Ky, two sisters; Elizabeth “Betty” Knotts of Parsons and Margaret Roy of Hambleton, seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are two brothers; Earl Grow and Harry Grow and two sisters; Georgia Dumire and Mary Dougherty.
She was a graduate of Thomas High School with the class of 1939. Dorothy was a faithful member of St. John’s United Methodist Church since 1957. She received the Special Mission Recognition Award and the 1996 Mother of the Year Award from the St. John’s United Methodist Women’s Society of which she was a member. She was also a member of the Women’s Sunday School Class and served on the kitchen committee for several years. She was a member of the Parsons Chapter #91 Order of the Eastern Star and a past member of the former Liberty Rebekah Lodge #95 of Parsons. Dorothy and her husband, Melvin are best known for owning and operating the Western Auto in Parsons form 1956 to 1966.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Sunday from 6 to 8 PM. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Monday, July 16, 2007 at 1 PM. The Reverend John Morrison will officiate and interment will follow at the Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows.
