Charlotte Marie Sickels was born the daughter of Edmond and Anna Miller Shad of rural Fontanelle, Iowa on March 27, 1917 and died in Dexter, Iowa on February 12, 2004 at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 16 days.
Charlotte graduated the salutatorian of Fontanelle, Iowa High School. She was married on August 20, 1937 in Orient, Iowa to Harvey Sickels. They farmed until 1942. When Harvey joined the navy. Charlotte was the first married student to attend Jennie Edmundson Nursing School in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she graduated in 1946. She returned to Fontanelle, Iowa where she was a surgical nurse of the Adair County Memorial Hospital for 10 years. She continued on as a medical nurse until 1967 when she and Harvey moved to Des Moines, Iowa where she worked as a nurse for Des Moines General Hospital and Fountain West until her retirement in mid 1980. During her retirement, Charlotte and Harvey traveled many times to the west coast to see the ocean and the mountains until dad’s death in 1990. She was known for her exceptional baking skills and specialized in pies. She loved working in her yard and had at one time 90 hybrid tea roses. She enjoyed spending time with family especially her granddaughter Sonja and grandson Matt.
Charlotte is survived by her daughter Linda Westfall of Dexter, IA; son Steve Sickels and wife Deanna Fox of Cedar Rapids, IA; grandson Matt Westfall of Dexter, IA; granddaughter Sonja Sickels of St. Louis, MO. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harvey and a brother Willis Shad.
