| | | Richard Melvin Schultz was born on May 27, 1927 to Melvin and Fronia (Olson) Schultz in New Ulm, Minnesota. He moved with his family to Welcome and attended school there. On August 5, 1944, Dick served in the United States Navy until his honorable discharge on May 30, 1946. He returned to Welcome where along with his brother, Kenneth, operated a GasStation. On March 26, 1951 , he was united in marriage to Darlene Theobald at Welcome, Minnesota. After their marriage they lived in Welcome where Dick and Darlene owned and operated “Dick’s Tavern”. He later owned and operated “Whole Cow Meats and Seafood” for many years. Most recently he owned and operated Elm Tree Trailer Court in Welcome. For over thirty years, Dick and Darlene spent there winters in Naples, Florida. Dick was a member of Welcome American Legion Post #553 and the Veterans of Foreign War Post. He was a former member of the Welcome Fire Department. You normally could find Dick driving around in his Van stopping and visiting with people and joking with them. Fishing, boating, working or going to Edie’s Restaurant in Fairmont for morning coffee and a around of liar’s dice. He watched NASCAR on his television and enjoyed going to the races. Dick was a Jim Beam Bottle collector and enjoyed animals especially his dog.
On Friday afternoon, July 3, 2009, Dick died at Fairmont Medical Center in Fairmont, Minnesota at the age of eighty-two years.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Welcome, Minnesota; brother, Kenneth Schultz of Jackson, Minnesota; sisters, Norma Caquelin and husband, Gary, Ruth Ann Wannarka and Elaine Flohrs and husband, Lowell all of Fairmont, Minnesota; brother and sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Stalhein and husband, Glenn, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Jim Theobald of Fairmont, Minnesota, Sharon Theobald of Fairmont, Minnesota; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Willard and Donavan; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Schultz and Anita Schultz; one brother-in-law, Duane Wannarka; nephew, Scott Jorgensen and other relatives and friends.
Interment will be in the Welcome City Cemetery with full military honors by the Welcome American Legion Post #553.
