Donald P. Abben, age 81, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Allen Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 22, 1931 in Hudson, Iowa the son of Richard and Malinda Louise Degner Abben. Donald attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology for machinist training. He married Elsie Richardson and the couple later divorced. Donald married Ferne Violet Harris on August 29, 1968 in Des Moines.

Donald worked in several field during his lifetime including farming, Hawkeye Steel and John Deere. He later owned and operated Post Office Vending Co. in Waterloo until his retirement. Donald was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, the National Federation of the Blind and a former member of the Gutter Sweepers bowling league.

Survivors include his wife, Ferne of Waterloo; a son, Dirk (Barb) Abben of Janesville, IA; a daughter, Sabrina Jackson of Waterloo; 9 grandchildren, Trinity (Audrey), Shane, Katrina, Denise, Malinda, Zackary (Andrea), Robert, Trisha and Samantha; 4 great grandchildren, Makinzie, Eli, Laikyn and John; 2 sisters, Shirley (Clifford) Schilling of Ionia, IA and Karen (Gary) Flemming of La Porte City; a brother-in-law, Don Pierce of Waterloo and 2 former daughters-in-law, Geneva Abben and Karen Abben.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Shane Abben; a sister, Darlene Pierce and 2 brothers, Vern and Cecil Abben.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2812 Willow Lane, Cedar Falls with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Public visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, June 24 at Garden View Chapel and an hour prior to services on Tuesday at the Church.
