Gail E. “Gus” Mather, 85, of Waterloo, died Thursday, August 26, 2010 at his home of natural causes. He was born July 27, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Thomas M. and Urania Buker Mather. He married Bertha “Bonnie” Phillips on September 7, 1946 in Waterloo; she preceded him in death on August 29, 1999.

Gus worked as an Engineer for the Rail Road for 47 years, retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of the Waterloo AMVETS Post #19 and the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post #138.

Survived by: one son, Thomas Mather of Waterloo; three daughters, Susan Mather and Sandra Davies, both of Waterloo, Cynthia Higdon of Ft. Wayne, IN; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; a special friend, Mary Henry of Cedar falls and his dog, B.G.

Preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; on great grandson, Cory Tovar and one sister, Velda O’Neal.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 31 at the Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball. Military rites will be conducted by the Waterloo Amvets Post #19 and Evansdale Amvets Post #31 Visitation will be held Monday from 5-7 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the funeral home. Private family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
