VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES
| | | Harold Martin Seipold, one of four children of Martin August Ernst Seipold and Grace Estella (Johnson) Seipold, was born on October 7, 1934 in his parent’s farm home in Indian Creek Township, Mills County, Iowa. He was baptized, confirmed and a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Hastings, Iowa. Harold attended Golden Hill Country School through the 8th grade and graduated from Malvern High School in 1952. Following school, he began farming with his parents. In 1952, with his talent in art, he entered a contest sponsored by the Earl May Seed Company to paint the American Beauty Rose. He won a free correspondence art course from the Famous Artists School in Westpoint, Connecticut.
Harold and Virginia Louise Leu were married on July 6, 1958 at St. John’s Lutheran Church and made their home on the M. J. and Elsie Bruce farm, north of Malvern. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Anne Maria, Karla Louise, and Bret Harold. In 1973, the family moved to a 280-acre farm in Anderson Township in Mills County. In 1974 and 1975, the four-room house was enlarged with a two story, six-room addition, in which a garage and greenhouse were added later, with all the remodeling built by Harold.
Harold was very active in the church, a member of the Church Council, holding the offices of Trustee, Evangelism Board, Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President, plus other various committees. For many years, he taught Sunday School and served as Sunday School Superintendent. He sang in the church choir for nearly 60 years. Harold was active in the Mills County Fair, served on the Fair Board, was superintendent of the 4-H and open class garden and agriculture exhibits, and a member of the Mills County Master Gardeners. He was a long-time Mills County Farm Bureau member and had served as secretary. Harold was a board member of the East Liberty Cemetery Association for more than 30 years and had served as chairman.
Harold enjoyed growing and arranging flowers and provided many floral arrangements for church services. He refurbished old furniture and picture frames, and built beautiful china cabinets for his three children as their wedding gift. Harold found and helped restore the original entry doors of the East Liberty Church. He also found time to run and participate in local “fun runs” and received trophies. Harold and Virginia enjoyed trips to Germany in 1985, 1991, and 1996. During their 1991 trip, they stayed with relatives in East Berlin, and in 1996, they traveled to the towns and rural areas of his ancestors, now located in western Poland.
Surrounded by his family, Harold passed away on September 23, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 16 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
