  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Susan Isabell Beeching, one of three children of Cora Eva (Northam) and Perry Samuel Russell, was born in Jonseboro, Indiana on June 5, 1905. Susan grew up in Jonesboro where she attended school. The young family moved to Canada where her father worked for a glass manufacturer. While in Canada, Susan’s mother underwent surgery, developed pneumonia and died. Following her death, the family returned to Jonesboro. Susan began nurses training in Indianapolis, IN and graduated in 1926. She worked as a private duty nurse and then as the company nurse for Gruno Radio. The Gruno factory closed and Susan returned to private nursing until the factory was purchased by Farnsworth Radio and reopened. The factory was later purchased by RCA Radio and Television and Susan continued her nursing duties.
Susan and Oscar Kenelm Grindle were married in Jonesboro on June 15, 1934. Susan became a mother to Oscar’s children, Ruth, Bill, and Fred and the family made their home in Marion.
Following their son Bill’s death at age 21 of cancer, Susan and Oscar decided to retire and moved to a lake home near Warsaw, Indiana. It was not long before Susan began work as the company nurse at Dalton Foundries and Oscar opened a small electrical repair shop. They enjoyed their new home and Susan could often be found fishing on the lake. Susan and Oscar had been married 26 years when Oscar died in 1960.
On January 27, 1962, Susan and Homer Beeching were married. They made their home in Warsaw and had just begun their new life together when Homer died three months later.
In 1972, Susan moved to Glenwood, Iowa to be closer to her daughter Ruth. In 1974, she began work as the Director of Nursing at the Glen Haven Home in Glenwood, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Glenwood and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was the director of the Meal Site in the early years when the meals were prepared in Malvern and then served at the Glenwood Catholic Church and was still quite active when the Meal Site was moved to the Masonic Temple in Glenwood.
Susan’s health forced her to move to the Glen Haven Home in January of 1998. She died at Glen Haven on November 27, 2005 at the age of 100 years, 5 months, and 21 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Oscar Grindle and Homer Beeching; sons Bill Grindle and Fred Grindle; and brothers Ralph Russell and Maurice Russell. Susan is survived by her daughter Ruth Hurst and her husband Ronald of Glenwood; daughter-in-law Louise Grindle of Gas City, IN; 12 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
