Edward Dean Bingham, one of three children of LeRoy Lawrence Bingham and Grace Edith (Hilton) Bingham, was born at Omaha, NE on June 4, 1935. The family lived and farmed near Anderson, IA and moved to Malvern when Dean was age 11. Dean graduated from Malvern High School in 1953 and enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in Japan and Korea for two years.
Dean and Frances Elizabeth “Bitsy” Darrah were married on February 25, 1956 in the Malvern United Methodist Church and lived in the area until 1961 when they moved to Colo, IA and then Nevada, IA. Dean worked at Nevada in the grocery business for 25 years. Dean was an accomplished woodworker and in 1980, he and Bitsy became self-employed dealers in featuring woodworking and crafts. One of his favorite pastimes was carving Santas. He and Bitsy traveled extensively for many years participating in country folk art shows in 23 states. In 1990, they moved from Nevada to historic Brownville, NE where they opened the Snoop Shop. Following surgery in 1993, Dean was unable to work or travel. He tended the Brownville Information Center for several years. His other interests included gemology, antiques, Gideon’s, VFW, and avidly reading books on the Civil War and visiting many of the Civil War sites. Dean was a member of the Brownville Methodist Church. Dean was a gentleman and a “gentle man” and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dean and Bitsy had been married for 47 years when Dean died at their home in Brownville on November 18, 2003. He had attained the age of 68 years, 5 months, and 14 days. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; sister Virginia Howrey and two brothers-in-law, Richard Howrey and C. Deane Kellner.
Dean is survived by his wife Elizabeth of Brownville; three sons, Warren Lee Bingham and his wife Diann of Malvern, Ron Bingham of Des Moines, IA, and Rod Bingham and his wife Virginia of Middle Amana, IA; daughter Amy Bingham of Minneapolis, MN; seven grandchildren, Lindsey of Colo, Jimmy and Johnny of Nevada, Jared and Lindsey Gustin, Nate and Ben Hoy of Middle Amana; sister Mary Ann Kellner of Kiawah Island, SC; three nephews; other relatives and friends.
