| Leona Grace Benedict, the youngest of eight children of Martha Mae (Nelson) Hauger and Volentine Leland Hauger, was born at her parent’s farm near Malvern, Iowa on December 6, 1916. Leona grew up in Malvern and Glenwood, Iowa and attended Frog Pond Country School through the 8th grade. Following school, Leona worked as a cook in both Malvern and Glenwood restaurants.
On March 25, 1933, Leona and Delbert Vernon Benedict were married in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm near Silver City, Iowa and were blessed with a daughter, Joan Alberta. Leona enjoyed her new role as mother and farm wife. In 1970, she began working as a Nurse’s Aide at the Glenwood State Hospital School. Later, she and Delbert moved from the farm into Glenwood. Leona and Delbert had been married 47 years, when Delbert passed away in March of 1980. Leona continued to live at her home in Glenwood and work at the school. In 1985, she retired from her supervisor position at the Glenwood Resource Center. Leona liked to knit, crochet, quilt, and loved to read. In 2000, she moved from her home to the Red Oak Care Center in Red Oak, Iowa. Leona passed away at the Center on January 2, 2009, at the age of 92 years and 27 days. Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law Howard McKern; brothers, Vern Hauger, Fred Hauger, and Floyd Hauger; sisters, Verna Prest, Martha Mayberry, Sadie Haines, and Beulah Brake. She is survived by her daughter Joan McKern of Emerson, IA; grandchildren Susan Peterson and Wayne of Red Oak; Beth Schroder and Lyle of Atlantic, IA, Cindy McKern of Glenwood and Bob McKern of Farragut, IA; great granddaughter Emily Peterson of Red Oak. A memorial fund has been established. | ||
