  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Wayne Ernest Blackman, the fourth of eight children of Charles LeRoy Blackman and Josie Meryl (Plumb) Blackman, was born on the family farm west of Malvern, Iowa on October 11, 1917. He grew up in the Hillsdale neighborhood near Malvern and attended Hillsdale Country School through the 7th grade. He started farming the Martin Cunningham farm at a very young age. He entered the United States Army on January 7, 1942, serving four years in the South Pacific “New Guinea Campaign” with the 131st Infantry Battalion. When he returned home, he continued to farm the Cunningham land and eventually purchased a farm nearby. Wayne later attended Tabor College for agriculture on the G.I. Bill.

Wayne and Marjorie Evelyn Hunt were united in marriage on March 30, 1946. They made their home on the farm and they were blessed with two children, Evelyn Diane and Charles Lee Roy.

In addition to farming, Wayne worked construction and helped in the building of the Malvern and Tabor High Schools. He was a carpenter for Markie Herrington Construction. In 1974, he built a home for his daughter Diane and her husband Duane, digging the basement with his Farmall “H” tractor.

Wayne was a member of the First Baptist Church in Glenwood, Iowa. He was a member of the Harry Hammons Post 520 of the American Legion in Malvern, served on the Mule Creek Watershed Board, and was a member of the Mills County Farm Bureau.

Wayne enjoyed farming, woodworking and carpentry. He and Marjorie took many trips with their family and loved the time spent with his children, granddaughter, and great granddaughters.

Wayne and Marjorie had been married 62 years when Wayne passed away at his home near Malvern on November 2, 2008, at the age of 91 years and 21 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin sisters, Gladys and Grace; brothers, Harold “Blackie” Blackman and wife Wilma, Floyd Blackman and wife Katie, Donald “Skeets” Blackman and wife Lucille; sister Edna “Sis” Powles and husband Lyle; sister-in-law Ruth Blackman; and son-in-law Duane Clay.

Wayne is survived by his wife Marjorie Blackman; children, Diane Clay and Lee Blackman; granddaughter Denise Bainter and husband John; great granddaughters, Ashleigh, Haleigh, Emileigh and Ryleigh Bainter; brother Everett “Corky” Blackman, all of Malvern; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
