James Daryl Dahl, the son of Thurman and Dorothy (Rowe) Dahl, was born December 24, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa. He passed away Friday, November 6, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 81.

He graduated from Arnolds Park High School. Following high school, James worked as a greens keeper and caddy at Brook’s Golf Course. James served in the United States Army Corp of Engineers and was stationed in Germany for 2 ½ years following World War II. He also served during the Korean Conflict.

On August 26, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mavis Hodnefield in Jackson, Minnesota. After their marriage while James was still in military service, they lived near Fort Carson, Colorado. Following his honorable discharge from military service they lived in Spirit Lake, Iowa, for a short time before moving to Estherville in 1952. Jim was employed with P.G. Gray’s and John Morrell Co. until he retired. He was also a custodian for Estherville Lutheran Church and drove truck for Rohlin Construction. Mavis died August 29, 1994.

He was a member of Estherville Lutheran Church and V.F.W. Post 3388 in Estherville. James liked to hunt, fish, camp and was a handy andy who liked to help family and friends with home repairs and remodels. He enjoyed Minnesota Viking’s Football, Iowa Hawkeye Football and Minnesota Twin’s Baseball. James also enjoyed taking his grandchildren to the annual Butterfield Threshers Event.

Left to cherish James’ memory are his children, Sharon Woodyard and her husband, Don; Gary Dahl and his wife, Brenda; Jeff Dahl and his wife, Kay all of Estherville; 9 grandchildren, Greg, Kim, Curt, Chad, Chris, Matthew, Stephanie, Braxton and Macy; 12 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and sister, Charlene Tastad and her husband, Ordine of Sioux City, Iowa.

He has been preceded in death by his wife; parents and one brother, Vernon.
