Forbes King
September 5, 1911 – May 28, 2009
Resident of San Carlos, died at 97 of age-related causes. He felt blessed to have had almost perfect health until the past year. Forbes was born in Portland, Oregon to Lorne and Alice King. He graduated from high school in the depths of the Depression and worked as a truck driver for two years to earn money for college. In 1936, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and immediately went to work for the Motors Insurance Corporation. During WWII, he volunteered to get into the service, but because they felt he had poor eyesight, he was turned down. He wanted to help with the war effort so he joined the International Red Cross, and was supervisor of field directors and hospital workers for the entire China Theatre. Following the war, he worked for and eventually became a part of management with Industrial Indemnity Company, San Francisco, for whom he worked thirty years.
Among Forbes’ many interests was sports. He played football in high school and college. He went to the gym five days a week until he was ninety-six. Forbes was a loyal Cal Bears fan and attended all home games.
The social causes that Forbes was involved in were many, and his enthusiasm endless. He started and managed a Children’s Immunization pre-school program, with San Carlos Rotary as a sponsor. A great deal of his time was spent helping abused and neglected children as a member of the Children’s Fund board. For them, he did fundraising, and through corporate and private individuals he collected as many as 3,000 toys at Christmas. He led a successful drive to collect used computers for Juvenile Hall. For ten years, Forbes was a tutor at White Oaks School.
He has received many awards and a great deal of recognition for his volunteer activities, one of which was being selected as San Carlos Citizen of the Year in 2000.
He was a long time member of San Carlos Rotary where he served a year as President, and he was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder.
Forbes and his wife Julie have been married fifty-eight years and they have two children: Patricia (husband Terry), Brian (wife Julie), one grandchild, Lily King, nieces and nephews.
