George “Andy” Baker
Andy Baker, San Carlos resident of 60 years, passed away May 20, 2009. Surrounded by his wife and family, he died peacefully at age 89.
Andy was born in Kim, Colorado in 1920 and grew up in a large family farming the southeastern Colorado plains. He left home at age eighteen and worked in a number of jobs including a position with Western Electric where he installed the first telephone switchboard in Aspen.
His work in Colorado led him to stay in a Colorado Springs boarding house where he met and married the landlady’s daughter, Dorothy Elston, in 1942. The newly married couple soon moved to Juneau, Alaska when Andy signed on with Pan American World Airways as a Communications Officer. He was soon transfered to Seattle, where he flew the Alaska territory routes before being transferred to San Francisco where he traveled Pan Am’s Pacific Routes to such destinations as Japan, China, Thailand, and Australia/New Zealand.
He left Pan Am in 1951 to join Varian Associates when the company was just beginning in San Carlos. His career with Varian lasted over 30 years and he retired in 1983 as a Senior Engineer. Andy was instrumental in the development Varian’s Nuclear Magnetic Resonance technology (our modern day MRI machines) and mass spectrometer products.
In retirement, Andy enjoyed his family and occasional trips abroad.
Dorothy and Andy were married for 66 years. They raised three children Susan, Terry and Randy. The youngest, Randy died in 1998. The families of Terry and Susan provided four grandchildren and two great-grand children. Dorothy continues living in San Carlos.
Andy’s activities were numerous. He was a charter member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church. He was active with his sons’ Boy Scout and Explorer activities including two week, fifty mile, High Sierra backpacking trips, and local weekend camping. He loved the outdoors, particularly hiking and fishing. He was a member of SIRS and enjoyed their travel and social activates. He originated a Varian retirees’ luncheon group which still meets regularly.
A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in San Carlos on Thursday, May 28th at 1:30pm. If desired, contributions can be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church or your favorite charity.
