| | | Arthur Hartland Mershon, Jr. 92, of Kenly, NC. Died February 21, 2009. He was born on September 27, 1916, in Albany , NY, to Arthur H. and Grace Mansfield Mershon. His life long involvement with journalism began while he was growing up in Rahway, NJ. He started his own student newspaper in the 8 grade. He attended Rutgers University and received his Bachelor of Letters degree in 1938. Following graduation, he worked as a reporter and /or editor for newspapers such as the Hunterdon Republican, the Daily Home News, Sunday Times, and both the Rahway News and Rahway Record. During the second World War he, served in the Army , first in the Field Artillery and then later in the Medical Division and in the Information and Education Division. In the early 1970’s he and his wife, Florence Fairest Mershon, purchased two newspapers in North Carolina, the Kenly News and the Freemont-Pikeville News. Operating the Kenly News paper till his retirement in the early 1980’s. He is survived by one son Donald Hartland Mershon and wife Loretta Kizer Mershon, grandson Walter Glenn Mershon and wife Beth, granddaughter Jennifer-Anne Conklin, seven great Grandchildren Andrew, Alexander, Matthew, Hartland, Nicholas, Amelia, and Piper, and one sister Clara Buroff of Rahway NJ.
Funeral service will be held Sunday March 1, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in the Minshew Funeral Home Chapel with visitation to follow the service. Burial will be in Kenly cemetery at 4:00 P.M. the same day.
