| | | Mayo Elisah Collier, Sr. age 87, of Kenly died Sunday November 30, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Collier was born in Johnston County to the late Bertie R. and Mary Bass Collier on January 3, 1921. He was the middle child of 13 and graduated from Micro High School. After high school, he joined the US Navy during WWII serving as a Pharmacist Mate working at Bethesda Naval Burn Center, where he treated victims of the European and Pacific Theaters. Following his military service, Mr. Collier graduated from NC Barber School in Durham and returned to Kenly to open his own barber shop. He opened in 1946 as Barber Shop #6 in Kenly and became the first shop to have air conditioning and to use compressed air. Mr. Collier has cut hair for some families for five generations, created a shop known as "The Meeting Place" where politics and current issues could be discussed, was well known for his stories and humor and his dedication to cut hair for the shut-ins. In June 2008 , his barber shop was recognized as the oldest in NC serving the community for 62 years. He was also a very active member of Kenly United Methodist Church serving in many roles. His civic activities included Kiwanis Club where he had served as president and the American Legion. He was regarded as avid fisherman and hunter. Everyone who knew Mr. Collier was aware of his compassion for others, his generousity and care for others in his community.
His funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. in the Kenly United Methodist Church. Rev. Jim Reed, Rev. Phillip List and Martha Dawn Klein will officiate at the service. Burial will follow at the Kenly Cemetery.
Surviving are: daughters, Myra Collier Myers of Kenly; Mary Collier Bottoms and husband Michael of Sharpsburg; son, Mayo E. Collier, Jr. and wife Martha Dawn Klein of Florence, S.C.; sisters, Margaret Sellers of Morganton; Alma Robertson and Mary Green both of Virginia Beach, VA;six grandchildren, Kim Hamer, Eli Collier, Peter Collier, David Pope, Amy Dellinger, and Hank Strickland; ten great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by sisters, Ethel Johnson, Effie Williams, Josephine Aycock, brothers, Clyde, Jim, Toye and Curtis Collier.
Two infant siblings.
