Georgia Jimos of Appleton,Wisconsin died at Appleton Medical Center Sunday, October 11, 2009. She was born October 8, 1911, at Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to Andrew and Vasiliki Andropolis. She married Andrew. C. Jimos in 1929 and has resided in the same home in Appleton since that time. Mr. Jimos preceded her in death in 1982.
Always proud of her Greek heritage, Mrs. Jimos enjoyed travels to Greece with her husband and later with her entire family. The transmission of this heritage was passed on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with much affection. She maintained a lifelong interest in religion, history and politics. Mrs. Jimos was fluent in Greek and English and wrote eloquently in both languages. She was an avid reader throughout her life.
She was a poll worker for many elections and never missed voting in an election. The city of Appleton recognized this dedication in 2000. Since her marriage, the city of Appleton has always been much loved and the many aspects of its offerings were enjoyed by the Jimos family. In 1979, she participated in creating the Landmark Quilt for the Outagamie Country Historical Society. The women who worked on this effort appliquéd and embroidered 16 squares from photographs into fabric. She was a member of the Women of the Moose for over 60 years.
Always primary in her life was her religion and family. She taught her Greek Orthodox religion with love to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Initially, the family attended Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. During drives to and from church, Mr. and Mrs. Jimos taught their faith to their children. The Jimos later were among the founders of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Appleton to which they dedicated many years of service. The St. Nicholas Womens Society is the philanthropic arm of the church to which Georgia belonged throughout her life in Appleton. She was among the founders of this group, which preceded the organization of an Orthodox church in Appleton and she held all offices in the organization. In 2001, the St. Nicholas Womens Group honored her for her years of service to the society.
Special joy was derived from seeing her family grown and happy. Many visits were enjoyed with her daughter, Saundra Dake, prior to her death in 1995.
Survivors include: two daughters: Irene (Neal) Gamsky, Bloomington, Illinois; Sophia (Bernard) Dunn, Manitowoc, WI; a sister: Dorothy Weyer, Sheboygan. She was dear Yiayia to grandchildren: Molly (Paul) Endter; Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Rich; Patricia Gamsky; Michael (Chris) Dunn; Bernard and Deborah Dunn and cherished great-Yiayia to 8 great-grandchildren: Jeffrey (Jill) Dunn; Andrew, Jacob and Josie Rich; Angelica Gamsky; Kathleen, Cassandra and Evelyn Endter; in addition to many dear nieces, nephews and friends. Granddaughter Jennifer Dunn preceded Georgia in Death.
In addition to those indicated, she was preceded in death by a brother, Peter and a sister, Faye in childhood; brothers Jacob and John Andropolis; sisters: Catherine Varnick and Helen Georgatsos, all of Sheboygan.
Her family treasures stories by Mrs. Jimos of their heritage and of their Yiayia during growing up years.
The funeral service for Mrs. Jimos will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, October 17, 2009, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 3333 N. French Rd, Appleton with Rev. Gregory Bruner officiating. Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 4:30 PM until 6:30 PM and on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jimos-Dake Childrens Fund of St. Nicholas Church.
