Jens, Henrietta

Henrietta age 109 of Appleton, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2009. She was born August 13, 1899 in Larrabee Township, Waupaca County, daughter of the late John and Clara (Knitt) Kautz. She married Theodore Jens November 28, 19l8 at Christus Lutheran Church in Clintonville, WI. The couple moved to Appleton (Ted’s hometown) the following year. They shared 70 years together before his death November 8, 1989.

Henrietta was a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an excellent homemaker and gifted in all needlework and design. She used those gifts in her volunteer work at Appleton Medical Center when it was being built as well as at her home church. Zion Lutheran Church was home to Henrietta for 90 years. She served as a PTA volunteer at Zion School and Appleton Public Schools. She was involved in various church organizations including the Zion Women’s Missionary Society, sewing circle and for over 30 years served as a money counter at church.

She loved reading, working crossword puzzles, gardening, fishing and travel. She told many stories about her trips. Henrietta visited all the lower 48 states with the exception of Louisiana. She thoroughly enjoyed her trips to Hawaii and Alaska. She spent a month in Europe in 1983, the “Luther Year” in Europe.

Civic responsibility was important to her. She was 21 when women won the right to vote in 1920 and voted in every Presidential election until 2008 when she was no longer able to do so. Her life spanned three centuries. She was born in the late 19th century and died in the early 21st century. Living in the decades of change from horse and buggy to flying in space, two World Wars, the Korean and Vietnam wars and the Great Depression took courage and faith. Henrietta had great faith in God and was a model of Christian witness.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law: Delores Fisk, Clintonville; Marilyn and Rev. Donald Hetzler, Appleton; 5 grandchildren: Jens (Lynel) Hetzler, John Hetzler; Paul (Betsy) Hetzler, John (Lois) Fisk, Ann Fisk; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 5 brothers: Albert, Henry, Robert, Oscar and Walter; 2 sisters: Elda Suchadolski and Jeanette Gensler; and two infant siblings and a brother-in-law: Mel Fisk.

Services will be held 11 AM Saturday January 10, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church 912 N. Oneida St. with Rev. Ron Nielsen officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Saturday from 10 AM until the time of service. Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church.

The family would like to thank the staff at Brewster Village for the care Henrietta received this past year.
